Informing utility and service providers

It is very important that you begin to arrange for your services and utilities to be transferred to your new address long before the date of your move. Some services, such as satellite TV or broadband, may require fees, for things like dish installation or to update the telephone line and you may find that a different provider will give you a cheaper deal. Eco Movers advises that allowing plenty of time to do these important jobs will also help to reduce your stress levels.

You can inform your gas, electricity or water companies of your intended move by phone or via the internet but you will need quite a lot of information, so check on the website before you contact them. British Gas, for example, asks for the details of the people moving into your old house as well as those moving out of your new one. If your gas or electricity company provides cover to meet the costs of servicing heating equipment, this will also need to be transferred to the new address and you may have to contact a separate department. You might find that you need to change suppliers if your old company doesn’t cover the new area, or you could simply want to take advantage of cheaper prices from a company that doesn’t operate in your old area. Gas and electricity companies, and sometimes water companies, will require a meter-reading. Some will want to do this themselves, while others will want you to do it on moving day, which is included on Eco Movers’ checklist of jobs.

Some people have an integrated package of services, including phone, broadband and television. This makes informing these providers easier, as there is only one point of contact, but doesn’t necessarily lead to a straightforward transfer, as the company may not provide the same services in the new area. Whether your package is integrated or consists of separate services, Eco Movers strongly recommend you investigate what is available at your new address, especially before agreeing to pay additional fees to your current providers. Don't forget to contact your mobile phone supplier as well. Even though your coverage is likely to continue uninterrupted, they will need to keep your contact details updated for billing purposes and to ensure any insurance on your handset remains valid.
