Moving with Children

Moving house can be incredibly stressful, even if you're looking forward to it. However, it can be much worse for young children, as they often take comfort from routine and there can be little more disruptive than leaving the home they know and love. However, there are several ways of making the move less of an ordeal.

Whilst it may be tempting to wait as long as possible before telling them, it's better to let children know as soon as you have had the move confirmed. This gives them longer to get used to the idea and allows you to arrange for them to 'say goodbye' properly. It's a nice idea to create a scrapbook about the house or area you're leaving; add photographs, the child's own drawings and messages from friends.

A large part of the stress is caused by fear of the unknown, so try to visit the new house and area together beforehand. Take photographs, let the child spend a little time in their new room and find some things he or she will like in the locality, such as parks or cinemas. Using the photographs and the shared experience of the visit, you can discuss the move with the child, emphasising the good points and planning fun activities for when it actually happens.

Give your child a job to do, so they have an active role; they could fold towels or wrap plates in packing material, as long as it’s age-appropriate. Their own toys and books should be the last things you pack and several of their favourites could be set aside to be packed in a small piece of hand-luggage, so that they have immediate access to them.

On the day of the move, try to arrange for a friend or family member to look after the child, to minimise disruption. If they have to travel with you, make sure you have enough distractions for the journey, such as toys, colouring books and some drinks and snacks. With a little forethought, it's possible to ease the stress on the child and therefore, on everybody else.
