Moving Mistakes to Avoid

moving mistakesHere at Eco Movers, we’ve pretty much seen it all when it comes to house removals. In this week’s blog, I thought it would be good to share some of the most common mistakes we’ve seen people make when moving house and, more importantly, what you can do to avoid them.

Forgetting to do something crucial

Write a to-do list as soon as you know you are going to move. Look at our moving checklist to double check that you have got everything you need on your list and then start working your way through it. Much of the ‘administration’ side of house moving, such as arranging for your phone line to be transferred, can be arranged weeks ahead so try to do as much of this as you can in advance, rather than leaving it to the last week.

Not getting quotes from different moving companies

If you take the first quote you are given, you have no idea whether it is competitive or not. Get quotes from two or three companies and don’t base your decision solely on price alone, but on the overall service each company will provide.

Having too much stuff to move

Removal companies charge by the quantity of goods to be moved and the number of men and vans they have to supply to complete the move so it’s a good idea to have a thorough declutter before you move. Be ruthless about getting rid of stuff you don’t use, otherwise you are just paying someone to move your unused and unwanted belongings around!

Using inferior packing materials

– Removal-standard packing boxes are designed to carry heavier loads and it’s worth paying for them.
– Beware of low quality single walled boxes that some moving firms and storage facilities will use.
– Removals specific cartons should be double walled for extra rigidity and protection of your goods.
– Paying for good quality materials is certainly cheaper than having to buy new plates and mugs after the last ones fell through the bottom of a cardboard box you picked up at the supermarket for free…

Trying to do it without professional moving companies

It’s possible to do a move yourself but it’s not advisable. Professional moving companies have years of experience and will move you faster and with less hassle than you could do yourself. Most people who have opted to use moving companies agree it’s money well spent.
