New Year’s Renovations!

New Year’s Renovations!

By Sean Ford | December 20, 2013

When making New Year’s Resolutions, hot on the heels of the classic ‘go on a diet’, ‘stop smoking’ and ‘do more exercise’ is ‘sort out this house’. The start of a New Year is a great time to have a post-Christmas clear-out and do all those much put-off DIY jobs to get your house looking great for the New Year. If nothing else, you’ll probably need a clear-out to make room for all the Christmas presents you received.

So forget about New Year’s Resolutions, let’s look at some ideas for New Year’s Renovations!

The very best thing you can do to give your house a quick and cost-free makeover is to get rid of unused and unwanted clutter. We all have books, ornaments and other bits and bobs lying around that never get used, so make your first New Year’s Renovation a mission to get rid of your clutter. First things first, walk around the house with a bin-bag and get rid of actual rubbish – old magazines, torn clothing and broken things. Once you’ve got rid of the rubbish, start looking at what you don’t use. Don’t throw working things away – give them to charity or sell them.

If you can’t bear the finality of getting rid of things at this stage, why not consider secure storage for a fixed period of time – if you find you haven’t needed the items after, say, six months, then be firm and get rid of them then. Your house will look so much better and will be so much easier to keep tidy. Just don’t let the clutter pile up again!

New Year’s Renovation number 2 is to decorate. Now is a great time to do some easy decorating – the weather is generally rubbish so why not put all that time indoors to practical use? A simple coat of paint can transform a room, turning it from a tired, grubby room into a warm and welcoming space. Even just a weekend spent on a couple of rooms will brighten things up and give your home a lift during the dark days of winter.

Clean the carpets
Our final New Year’s Renovation is directed at your floors. If you have carpets, why not hire a carpet cleaning company to come in and give them all a good clean. You will be amazed at just how much better your carpets will look after a professional clean. Alternatively, for a cheaper option, hire the cleaning machine and fluid from your local DIY store and do it yourself. Whichever way you choose to do it, your carpets will look great.

I hope that you are inspired by these relatively quick and easy ideas to spruce up your home. But it’s not New Year yet so put your renovation plans away for now, settle down and enjoy the festive season, wherever you are and whomever you are with. Merry Christmas from all of us at Eco Movers!
